Yves Klein
b. 1928, Nice, France
d. 1962, Paris, France
Yves Klein was a very important figure in post-war European art. He is best known for his blue monochromatic paintings. Klein considered blue as a color that had a way to get in touch with the immaterial. In 1957 he exhibited eleven identical monochromatic paintings. His blue was ultramarine and reminiscent of the lapis lazuli used in medieval paintings of the Madonna's roe. In 1960, Klein became one of the founding members of the group of artists known as "Nouveaux Realists". Their manifesto was one sentence, "The New Realists have become conscious of their collective identity; New Realism = new perceptions of the real."
