Paul Klee b. 1879, Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland
d. 1940, Locarno-Muralto, Switzerland
Paul Klee was a German, born in Switzerland. He began his formal art studies in 1898 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. His early works were mainly drawings and graphics. Klee was interested in the Old Masters as well as contemporary art movements-especially Cubism, Expressionism and Surrealism. His art reflects these influences and interests but his style often reflected his dry humor. In 1911, he joined the group of artists known as "Der Blau Reiter" and first exhibited with them in 1912. A turning point in Klee's art was a 1914 trip to Tunisia. He wrote in his diary, "Color has taken possession of me, no longer do I have to chase after it. I know that it has a hold of me forever."
