Alexander Calder
b. 1898, Lawton, Pennsylvania, USA
d. 1976, NYC, USA
Although both his father and grandfather were successful sculptors, Caler first studied mechanical engineering. In 1922, he moved to New York City to study art. By 1926, he had moved to Paris and quickly became acquainted with many avant-garde artists. During this time, he invented wire sculpture which he called "drawing in space." A visit to Mondrain's studio, "shocked him" into embracing non-representational art. By combining wire sculpture with abstract and geometric shapes and discrete mechanical parts, he created a new type of sculpture. The artist Marcel Duchamp coined the term, mobiles.
