Dali's early training in art was in the 19th-century Academic tradition which emphasized technical skills. In 1921 he entered the School of Fine Arts in Madrid. After meeting the poet Frederico Garci Lorca, Dali became interested in some of the ideas of Surrealism. In 1929, he joined the Surrealist group. Known for his technical skills, Dali continued to paint recognizable objects but often in either distorted (like the "melting" clock) or incorporated into unreal or dreamlike compositions. In his long career, he worked in many mediums including painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, and film.
